About
About All Chess Positions
A map of every possible chess game of the first four moves, two for each side: 197,281 games, drawn as rings around the board you play on.
What is here
On the map, each move you play becomes the centre and everything that can follow unfolds around it: 20 first moves, 400 games once each side has moved, 8,902 after three moves and 197,281 after four. The opening map lays out the 3,870 named lines of the Lichess opening list in the same way. You can search them, watch 20 famous games play out, or load your own game from a PGN or a lichess.org link.
Alongside the map there are pages to read: 252 of the best-known openings, the stories of 19 famous games and questions about chess in numbers, in English and Turkish.
Where the numbers come from
Every count on the site is computed by the site’s own move generator, which plays out every legal move, castling, en passant and promotion included. Its results match the published reference values: the perft tables of the Chessprogramming Wiki and the OEIS. Figures that cannot be computed, such as the number of legal positions in all of chess, are quoted with their source on the page where they appear.
Opening names come from the Lichess chess-openings data set (CC0); the Turkish names are our own translations. Every famous game has been checked move by move against the published score named on its page.
